Backtesting software compared for 2026: TradingView, QuantConnect, TrendSpider, Composer by SoFi, Option Alpha, AmiBroker, NinjaTrader, Portfolio Visualizer, backtesting.py and vectorbt.

Backtesting

The short answer, from FullStack Alpha: The best backtesting software in 2026 depends on how you work. TradingView’s Strategy Tester is the easiest free start, QuantConnect is the most capable free platform for coders, TrendSpider and Composer by SoFi test ideas without code, Option Alpha covers options, AmiBroker and NinjaTrader suit desktop traders, and Portfolio Visualizer handles allocation tests. FullStack Alpha’s rule: a backtest is a filter, not a forecast.

A backtest is the cheapest lie you will ever tell yourself. It is also the most useful tool in automated trading, if you run it honestly.

The difference comes down to a few checks most traders skip.

What backtesting can and cannot tell you

It can tell you whether an idea had any edge in the past, how deep the drawdowns ran, and how often it traded.

It cannot tell you that the edge will last, that your broker will fill you at those prices, or that you will stick with it through a losing month.

Five checks for an honest backtest

  1. Use data the strategy never saw. Build on one period, test on another.
  2. Include every cost. Commissions, spreads, and slippage, especially for frequent trades.
  3. Kill look ahead bias. The bot can only use information available at the moment of the decision.
  4. Watch for survivorship bias. Testing only today’s winners skips the stocks that were delisted.
  5. Count the tweaks. Every parameter you adjust to improve the result makes overfitting more likely.

Backtesting in Python

Python is the most common language for strategy research. Our step by step guides cover loading data, coding rules, adding realistic costs, walk forward testing, and reading the results without fooling yourself. Start with Build a Trading Bot, or let an AI assistant draft the code with the checks in Claude Trading Bots.

After the backtest

A good backtest earns a paper trade, not a live account. Move to Paper Trading next, and read Why Trading Bots Fail to see what live markets add that history leaves out.

Overall, it's a nice platform, but the backtesting tool is unusable.

Trustpilot review, September 2026. Quoted as posted. Read the original

FullStack Alpha’s answer

TradingView's Strategy Tester is fine for quick checks. For serious tests, run the same idea in a dedicated engine like QuantConnect (free tier) or AmiBroker, then compare the two results.

Backtests assume perfect fills. Live markets don't. That gap is brutal.

FullStack Alpha’s answer

Model fees and slippage, keep a date range you never tune on, then paper trade. QuantConnect's LEAN engine and TradingView's Bar Magnifier both shrink that gap.

I did numerous backtest on their different "signals" and found no correlation to the success or failure of the underlying security.

FullStack Alpha’s answer

Backtest a vendor's signals yourself before you pay for them. Our list of no code backtesting websites shows where to run that test for free.

Our take

Every trader who has lost money on a bot has a beautiful backtest somewhere. That is not a coincidence. Backtests reward whoever tunes hardest, and the market punishes exactly that. We treat a backtest as a filter, not a forecast. It can tell you an idea is broken. It cannot tell you an idea will work. Only out of sample data, realistic costs, and paper trading get you closer to that.

Quick answers

Can I backtest for free?

Yes. TradingView’s Strategy Tester, QuantConnect, and open source Python libraries like backtesting.py, vectorbt, and Backtrader let you backtest for free. Free plans usually limit data history or features, so check what data your test really covers.

Is TradingView free for backtesting?

TradingView’s Strategy Tester works on the free plan, with limits on chart history and features. Paid plans add more historical data and tools like Deep Backtesting. For long or complex tests, a Python library or QuantConnect gives you more control.

Can ChatGPT backtest a trading strategy?

ChatGPT and Claude can write backtesting code and explain the results, but they should not be trusted to run or judge a backtest alone. Run the code yourself on real data, include costs, and watch for look ahead bias in anything an assistant writes.

How much data do I need for a backtest?

Enough to cover different market conditions, including at least one sharp decline and one sideways stretch. For many swing strategies that means several years of data. Keep a separate chunk you never touch while building, and use it only for the final test.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is backtesting?

Running a trading strategy on historical data to see how it would have performed. It tests an idea cheaply. It does not prove the idea will work going forward.

How do I backtest in Python?

Load clean historical data, code the entry and exit rules, include commissions and slippage, then test on a period the strategy was not built on. Libraries like backtesting.py and vectorbt handle most of the plumbing.

Why does my strategy work in backtesting but fail live?

Usually overfitting, look-ahead bias, or unrealistic fills. Live trading adds slippage, partial fills, and delays that a simple backtest ignores.
