Four kinds of “free”
- Free tier. A real product with limits: fewer strategies, delayed data, or one connected broker.
- Free trial. The full product for a few days or weeks. Mark the cancel date before you start.
- Open source. Frameworks like LEAN, backtesting.py, and Backtrader cost nothing to download and a lot of hours to run well. Freqtrade, the well known open source crypto bot, is a useful reference for how these projects are built, even though our focus is stocks.
- “Free” because you are the product. Bots that earn from your order flow, upsells, or a deposit they hold. Be careful here.
What we check in every free AI trading bot
- What the free tier really includes, and the first feature that forces an upgrade.
- Data speed. Delayed quotes can turn a good strategy into a bad one.
- Paper trading. Free paper trading is the single most useful free feature in this market.
- Broker support on the free plan versus paid.
- How it makes money if you never pay.
The smartest free starting point
Before you spend anything, run a strategy on a free paper trading account. Most major brokers offer one, including Interactive Brokers, Alpaca, and Webull. See Paper Trading.
If you can code, the free route goes much further. Open source frameworks and a broker API give you a complete bot for $0 in software. Start with Build a Trading Bot and Claude Trading Bots.

Our take
Free is a price, not a gift. Somebody pays for the servers, the data, and the engineers, and if it is not you with a subscription, it is you in some other way: slower data, fewer features, an upsell, or a company holding your deposit. None of that makes free bad. It makes free something to understand before you rely on it. The smartest free move is still a paper trading account.
Quick answers
How do you make a free AI trading bot?
Use a free paper trading account, a free broker API such as Alpaca’s, and an open source Python framework like backtesting.py or LEAN. An AI coding assistant can help write the code. Your real costs become time, hosting, and any market data upgrades.
Which AI trading bot is best and free?
The best free option is usually a free tier or trial from a bot that supports your broker, or an open source framework if you can code. Check what the free plan leaves out, such as real time data or live trading, before you build a routine around it.
Do free trading bots have hidden fees?
Often, yes. Common hidden costs are paid market data, features locked behind upgrades, trading costs on every order, and in some cases wider spreads or payment for order flow. Read the pricing page and the broker’s fee schedule before you connect a free bot.
