The short answer, from FullStack Alpha: Interactive Brokers and Alpaca are the easiest brokers to automate, because both have official APIs and free paper accounts. TradeStation, E*TRADE, Tradier and Webull also connect to popular bots like Trade Ideas, StockHero, Surmount and TradersPost. Fidelity has no public trading API, and Robinhood routes AI agents through its own Agentic Trading program, based on FullStack Alpha’s September 2026 check.
Here’s the question almost nobody asks before paying for an AI trading bot: does it even connect to my broker?
It’s the most common reason a new subscription ends up unused. The bot works. It just doesn’t work with the account you already have.

Find your broker. Each page answers the same five questions:
- Does the broker allow automated trading at all?
- How does a bot connect? Official API, OAuth partner login, or TradingView webhook.
- Which AI trading bots are compatible, and which ones claim support but rely on workarounds.
- Is there a paper trading account so you can test the connection first?
- Which countries are locked out of the API or the bots.
Which bots work with which broker (September 2026)
FullStack Alpha compiled this table from each bot’s published list of supported brokers. A bot missing from a row may still connect through a webhook tool, but we only list connections the vendor publishes.

Interactive Brokers

Bots that connect: Trade Ideas, TradersPost, QuantConnect
Paper account: Free
Official site: interactivebrokers.com
The default broker for serious automation, with the TWS API, a Web API and a free paper account that mirrors live trading. Since July 28, 2026, its MCP connector lets AI tools like Claude Code and Cursor reach your account, and every order still needs your approval. The tradeoff is setup work: the gateway has to stay logged in.

Alpaca

Bots that connect: Trade Ideas, StockHero (paid tiers), Surmount, TradersPost
Paper account: Free
Official site: alpaca.markets
Built API first, with commission free US stock trading, a free paper environment and an official MCP server that defaults to paper. Alpaca raised $135 million in July 2026 to build what it calls agent first brokerage infrastructure, so expect new AI tools to plug in here early.

TradeStation

Bots that connect: Trade Ideas, StockHero (all plans), Surmount, Option Alpha, TradersPost
Test account: SIM environment
Official site: tradestation.com
The most widely supported broker among the bot platforms we track. It is the only broker on StockHero’s $49.99 Lite plan, Option Alpha is free with a TradeStation account of at least $10,000, and EasyLanguage lets you automate strategies inside the platform itself.

E*TRADE

Bots that connect: Trade Ideas, StockHero, Surmount, TradersPost
Test account: Sandbox API keys; Power E*TRADE paper trading
Official site: us.etrade.com
E*TRADE, owned by Morgan Stanley, still issues personal API keys with a sandbox for testing. Its login flow uses an older OAuth standard, so budget more setup time than you would for Alpaca.

Webull

Bots that connect: StockHero (higher plans), TradersPost
Paper account: Free, on live data
Official site: webull.com
Webull opened its OpenAPI to individual investors with sandbox testing, and on July 21, 2026 it added OpenAPI simulation to paper trading. That makes it one of the few big retail apps where a bot can practice on the same interface it will trade on.

tastytrade

Charles Schwab

Bots that connect: None of the platforms in our table list Schwab; build your own
Practice account: thinkorswim paperMoney
Official site: schwab.com
Schwab’s Trader API is open to individuals for their own accounts. The friction is the refresh token, which expires every 7 days, so a Schwab bot needs you to log in about once a week. That makes Schwab a build it yourself broker for now.

moomoo

Bots that connect: Build your own through OpenAPI
Paper account: Free
Official site: moomoo.com
A commission free app with free paper trading and an OpenAPI that supports moomoo US accounts. None of the no code platforms in our table list moomoo, so this is for people writing their own Python.

Robinhood

Bots that connect: Robinhood Agents, outside agents over MCP, TradersPost
Paper account: None
Official site: robinhood.com
Robinhood still has no paper trading and no classic REST API for stock bots. Instead it launched Agentic Trading in May 2026, which connects outside AI agents over MCP to a separate funded account, then announced built in Robinhood Agents on September 29, 2026.

Fidelity

Bots that connect: None we could verify
Paper account: None
Official site: fidelity.com
At our last check, Fidelity offered no public trading API for individual accounts. If automation is the plan, open a second account at one of the brokers above and keep Fidelity for long term holdings.

Three rules that save money
- An official connection beats a clever workaround. Unofficial logins can break overnight and can put your account at risk.
- Test the connection on paper first. A bot that places the wrong order size on paper will do it live too.
- Check the API key permissions. A trading key should place and cancel orders. It should not be able to move money out. Our Broker APIs section shows how to check.

I thus never got a change to test their AiBot. A shame but that's because of the Brokerages complicating things, not Stock hero.

Check the broker list before you pay for the bot. StockHero's Lite plan ($49.99 a month) connects to TradeStation only, so match the plan to your broker first.

Broker links break when login tokens expire. Schwab's API refresh token lasts 7 days, for example. Use a setup that alerts you when the link drops, and check it before each session.

Reconcile after every order. A good bot reads positions back from the broker instead of trusting its own log, and stops trading when the two disagree.

Our take
Here is the uncomfortable truth about broker support: plenty of bots list a broker logo on their homepage and then connect through a workaround that breaks the first time the broker changes a login screen. We care less about the logo and more about the plumbing. Official API, partner login, or webhook. Paper account first. If a bot cannot show you how it connects, it has not earned access to your account.
Quick answers
Can I automate my trading with Interactive Brokers?
Yes. Interactive Brokers supports automated trading through its TWS API and Web API, and many third party platforms connect to it. Start on an IBKR paper trading account, which mirrors the live platform, before you let any bot place real orders.
Does Robinhood allow trading bots?
At our last check, Robinhood did not offer an official public API for automated stock trading. Tools that claim Robinhood support usually rely on unofficial methods that can break or conflict with its terms. If automation matters, pick a broker with an official API.
Which broker is best for algorithmic trading?
For most retail builders, Interactive Brokers and Alpaca lead because both have public APIs and paper accounts. Interactive Brokers offers the widest market access. Alpaca is simpler to start with. The right pick depends on your markets, country, and account size.
