Phone showing an AI chat assistant prompt with the headline Charles Schwab launches Charley

October 6, 2026, 8:20 a.m. ET | By Jay Rocco, Founder and Editor, FullStack Alpha

Quick answer

Charles Schwab announced Charley, a generative AI assistant, on September 30, 2026. It begins rolling out in phases this month to eligible U.S. retail clients on Schwab.com and the Schwab Mobile App.

Charley answers questions, pulls quotes and account details, and handles a short list of account chores. Placing trades is not on the launch list Schwab published.

Key facts

  • Announced: September 30, 2026, 9:00 a.m. ET, in a Business Wire release datelined Westlake, Texas.
  • Rollout: in phases beginning October 2026, starting with eligible U.S. retail clients and expanding to other client groups over time.
  • Where it lives: the existing chat entry point on Schwab.com and in the Schwab Mobile App, by voice or text.
  • Select actions at launch: add or update watchlists, enroll eligible securities in dividend reinvestment, add beneficiaries, update contact information, add or update a trusted contact, and set or manage alerts in the mobile app.
  • Technology: large language models grounded in Schwab’s data and safeguards. Schwab says it uses third-party AI providers but did not name them.
  • Testing: Schwab employees piloted Charley earlier in 2026.
  • Schwab’s survey: 65% of more than 500 clients and prospects (at least $10,000 in retail assets, surveyed September 21 to 25, 2026) said AI can help with routine tasks or play a meaningful role in investing when paired with human expertise.

What can Charley actually do?

Think of Charley as a very fast front desk. Schwab lists five jobs at launch: help with everyday tasks, market information, account and service information, select actions, and a handoff to a Schwab representative.

Trading shows up only as a topic. Schwab says Charley can help clients find “information and next steps” on transfers, payments, trading and account actions. That is help finding the order ticket, not an agent that fills it.

The fine print matters too. Schwab’s own disclosure says “Charley may provide inaccurate or incomplete results” and tells users to verify information and confirm that account changes went through as intended.

Why won’t Schwab let Charley place trades?

Schwab did not spell out a reason. Its survey gives the clearest hint: investors were most comfortable using AI to answer questions, find account information and handle routine updates, “while preferring a person to make more meaningful actions in their account.”

Here is the market truth. When you are one of the largest brokers in the country, one confidently wrong AI answer does not hit one account. It hits a lot of them. For Schwab, slow is the strategy, not a bug.

Amy Ruegg, Head of Digital Retail at Charles Schwab, framed the launch this way: “Our clients want the ease of AI combined with the expertise, trust and relationships that are uniquely Schwab.”

How does Charley compare with Robinhood, Webull and Interactive Brokers?

The same week Schwab shipped Charley, two rivals shipped tools that go much further. The real split is not who has AI. It is how much rope each broker gives it.

BrokerAI productCan the AI place trades?Announced
Charles SchwabCharley assistantNot on the launch listSep 30, 2026
RobinhoodRobinhood AgentsYes; manual approval is on by default and can be turned offSep 29, 2026
WebullCloud MCP for Claude, Perplexity and GrokPrepares orders; each trade needs separate customer confirmationSep 29, 2026
Interactive BrokersMCP AI integrationDrafts trade instructions; clients convert them into orders manuallyJul 28, 2026

That gives retail traders a four-step ladder: answer, draft, confirm, act. Schwab sits on the first rung. Robinhood sits on the top one. We covered the Robinhood launch and its risk trade-offs in our Robinhood Agents breakdown, and Webull’s no-code setup in our Webull API and Cloud MCP guide.

Does Charley change anything for trading bots on Schwab?

Not today. Charley is a chat assistant inside Schwab’s site and app. Schwab’s release does not describe an API, an MCP server or any way for an outside model to connect to it.

Schwab’s other September AI move went to advisors, not retail traders. On September 14, Schwab and Anthropic announced plans to bring Claude for Financial Advisors to the 16,000-plus independent RIAs Schwab serves, connected to Schwab Advisor Center.

If you automate on Schwab, your route is still the developer API covered in our Schwab API guide. If you want an AI model connected directly to a brokerage account, our broker connection comparison shows which firms offer that and how each one handles order approval.

What should investors watch next?

  • The October rollout: who gets access first and how fast Schwab widens it to other client groups.
  • Thursday, October 15, 2026: Schwab is scheduled to report third-quarter results before the opening bell, per Benzinga. Listen for any Charley usage numbers or comments on AI in the trading flow.
  • Portfolio insights upgrades: Schwab said it will soon roll out expanded news, market overview and ETF content for the AI portfolio insights feature it introduced in May. No date was given.
  • Scope creep, the good kind or the bad kind: Schwab says Charley’s “knowledge and capabilities will continue to grow.” Any move toward order entry would be the real headline.
  • Robinhood Loops: Robinhood says this upcoming feature lets agents run standing instructions without per-trade approval. It is the opposite end of the ladder from Charley, and worth watching for how regulators respond.

Our take

Schwab shipped a concierge. Robinhood shipped a driver. Most traders will be fine with the concierge.

The danger in AI trading is rarely a dumb model. It is a confident model acting on your account at 2 a.m. with nobody checking. Schwab looked at that risk and drew the line at the order ticket. That is a process decision, and process beats prediction.

Your next step: before you connect any AI to a brokerage account, write down three answers. What can it see? What can it do without asking you? How do you shut it off in under a minute? If you cannot answer all three, keep per-trade approval switched on. Our AI trading agent risk checklist walks through each one.
