Interactive Brokers autonomous AI trading lets an AI agent place orders without your approval on each one, but only inside a dedicated, separately funded AI Partition of an individual, non-margin account. The rollout started October 15, 2026 with about 3,000 invited clients who had already used the supervised AI Connector, and IBKR says eligibility widens over the next few weeks. To qualify, IBKR’s own page requires at least 10 trades of $100 or more over two weeks in Review & Approve mode. The agent can trade eligible stocks and equity options with Market, Limit, Stop and Stop-Limit orders, Day only, with no margin, short selling or fractional shares.

Two days ago we wrote that the AI inside an Interactive Brokers account still could not place orders. That sentence aged fast.

On its Q3 2026 earnings call on October 15, Interactive Brokers said it has launched Autonomous AI Trading: eligible clients can connect the AI agent of their choice and authorize it to trade on its own. The catch is the fence. The agent only trades inside a separately funded partition of your account.

Quick answer

Interactive Brokers began a very limited rollout of autonomous AI trading on October 15, 2026. About 3,000 clients who had already used the human-in-the-loop AI Connector were invited first, with wider eligibility planned over the next few weeks. Agents connect through any compatible MCP client and trade only inside a dedicated partition the client creates and funds.

Key facts

  • What launched: Autonomous AI Trading, which lets an AI agent submit orders without you approving each one.
  • Who gets it: Roughly 3,000 invited clients in several countries, all prior users of the supervised AI Connector.
  • The guardrail: A dedicated, separately funded partition inside your existing account. No new account application.
  • The plumbing: Works with any AI tool that uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Perplexity was added as an official partner.
  • Scope at launch: Global stocks and options, with day, overnight, or combined sessions.
  • Same-day numbers: Q3 DARTs of 4.27 million, up 18% year over year. Customer accounts up 35% to 5.58 million. Customer equity up 27% to $964.7 billion.

What exactly did Interactive Brokers launch?

Delegated execution. You connect an agent through a compatible MCP app, create and fund a partition, and authorize the agent to trade there.

MCP is a standard way for AI apps to talk to outside services. Think universal adapter: one protocol, every chatbot.

Per IBKR’s AI integrations page, the login happens on IBKR’s side. You do not paste an API key into a chatbot. That is a better design than most retail “connect your broker” flows we have tested.

Chairman Thomas Peterffy was blunt about the size. “We started a very limited rollout of the autonomous trading,” he said, adding that about 3,000 clients were invited “over the last several days” and that “this number is going to greatly increase.”

Translation: IBKR built an experience filter, not a waitlist. The people who already watched an AI draft orders they had to approve are the ones now allowed to stop approving.

Who qualifies for IBKR autonomous AI trading, and what can the agent trade?

The details sit in the FAQ on IBKR’s AI integrations page, and they are tighter than the earnings call made them sound.

RuleWhat IBKR’s page says
Eligible accountsIndividual, non-margin IBKR accounts. Joint, retirement, advisor-managed, organizational and Lite accounts are not eligible
Trading requirementAt least 10 trades of $100 or more each over a two-week period in Review & Approve mode. An eligibility test is listed as coming soon
Partition fundingCash transferred from the parent account. Funding limits apply, and position transfers into the partition are not supported
Products and ordersEligible stocks and equity options; Market, Limit, Stop and Stop-Limit; Day time in force
Not supportedMargin trading, short selling, fractional shares, penny stocks, CLPs and Canadian stocks
WherePlanned for eligible clients of Interactive Brokers LLC, Australia, Singapore and U.K. AI Integration is not available in India or Japan
CostNo additional IBKR fee to connect a supported AI app. AI provider subscriptions and standard account, market data and trading charges may still apply

One detail does not line up with the call. Management talked about day, overnight or combined sessions, while the FAQ lists Day time in force only. Check what your partition settings actually allow before you assume an agent trades after the close.

A worked example. You want to fund a $2,000 partition. First you need 10 approved trades of at least $100 each inside two weeks, so at least $1,000 of order flow you reviewed by hand. That is the point. By the time the agent trades alone, you have seen it draft at least 10 orders and know how often you had to fix one.

What breaks in practice: revoking access does not automatically cancel pending or partially filled orders, per the FAQ. You revoke through Manage Third-Party Consents in Client Portal, then cancel open orders yourself. A kill switch that only cuts the connection leaves the last instructions working.

For developers, the same page lists the public MCP endpoint for apps outside the connector directories, such as Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex and Cursor: https://api.ibkr.com/v1/api/mcp-public. Gemini support is listed as coming soon.

Decision rule: take autonomous AI trading only if your account is individual and cash-only, you passed the 10-trade test without overriding the agent more than once or twice, and you have written down the partition size you can lose in full.

How does the account partition change the risk math?

It caps the blast radius. The agent’s authority ends at the partition line. It cannot touch the rest of the account.

You decide what the agent can lose by deciding what you fund.

That is the smartest thing in this launch. Nearly every retail automation blowup shares one ingredient: a bot with access to money the trader could not afford to lose.

If you run the supervised setup today, our guide on how to connect Claude to the IBKR API covers the mechanics, and our Oct 14 report on the Connector’s saved screeners shows what that version could and could not do.

Why does the MCP layer matter more than the AI brand name?

Because the protocol is the lock-in, not the chatbot. On the call, IBKR said the Connector now supports “any AI tool that uses the Model Context Protocol.” It also added account-level P&L, alert management and watchlists.

Once connection is standard, brokers stop competing on which AI they support and start competing on what the AI is allowed to do.

IBKR is not first to let an agent trade. Robinhood’s agents can already trade without sign-off, and Public is pushing the same direction, as we tracked in our broker AI agent launches roundup. What IBKR adds is the walled partition and an any-agent MCP door at a broker built for active traders.

What do the Q3 numbers say about trading activity?

The Q3 release shows DARTs, the daily average revenue trades, up 18% to 4.27 million. Accounts grew faster, up 35%.

Measured against Q2’s 4.82 million, Q3 DARTs fell 11% sequentially, and annualized DARTs per account slid from 207 to 168.

GAAP diluted EPS was $0.69 on $1.91 billion of net revenue. Adjusted EPS was $0.67. Shares fell about 2% after hours, per Investing.com.

A broker with softer per-account activity has a clear reason to ship software that trades on its own. Peterffy said as much: “we expect higher trading volumes related to AI adoption over time.” Not sinister. Just interested. Read the launch copy with that in mind.

Who should accept the invite?

A narrow group: people who ran the supervised Connector for months and saw its drafted orders hold up.

If you have never rejected an order an agent drafted, you do not know how often it gets the setup wrong.

Answer these before you fund a partition:

  • What is the most you would accept losing in it this quarter? Fund that, not a dollar more.
  • How fast can you shut it off? An agent trading overnight sessions makes decisions while you sleep. Know how to revoke access before you grant it. See why AI trading agents need an external kill switch.
  • What does it do in a halt or a gap? Bots get hurt most on the tape they never modeled.
  • Did you paper trade the logic first? Our Interactive Brokers paper trading guide covers where the simulation stops being honest.

What should investors watch next?

  • The expansion pace. Peterffy said eligibility widens “over the next few weeks.” Watch whether the pool grows past 3,000 and which countries get added.
  • Asset scope. Autonomous AI trading at launch covers stocks and equity options. Futures would be the riskier next step, given leverage.
  • Regulators. Delegated execution by a third-party AI is new ground for supervision rules. Watch Investor.gov and FINRA notices.
  • Competitors. Schwab’s Charley still does not place trades, as we noted at its launch. How long that holds tells you how fast the norm shifts.
  • Q4 results, expected in January 2027. The line to read is DARTs per account. If it keeps sliding while accounts climb, this launch is partly activity defense.

Our take

IBKR autonomous AI trading is the most carefully fenced retail AI trading product a major broker has shipped. That is the compliment and the warning.

The partition deserves credit. So does keeping credentials on IBKR’s side. Both are controls most earlier retail automation skipped.

But autonomous execution does not fix what retail traders get wrong. Accounts rarely underperform because orders went in too slowly. They underperform from oversized positions, no stop loss, revenge trades and late chases. A bad agent makes those mistakes faster, and at 3 a.m.

The partition is a position-sizing decision dressed up as a feature. Treat it like one. Compare it against other broker setups in our platform reviews, and keep up with every launch like this one at AI Stock Trading Bots.

Next step: before you accept any invite, write your partition rules on paper. Maximum loss, maximum position size, allowed sessions, and exactly how you revoke access. If you cannot fill in all four, you are not ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Interactive Brokers Autonomous AI Trading?

It is a feature, announced on the October 15, 2026 earnings call, that lets eligible clients connect an AI agent of their choice and authorize it to place trades without approving each order. The agent trades only inside a dedicated, separately funded partition of the client's account.

Who can use IBKR autonomous AI trading right now?

Access started as a very limited, invite-only rollout. About 3,000 clients in several countries who had already used the human-in-the-loop AI Connector were invited first. Interactive Brokers said it plans to expand eligibility over the following weeks.

Can the AI agent touch my whole Interactive Brokers account?

No. You create and fund a dedicated partition inside your existing account, and the agent can only trade with what sits in that partition. The amount you fund is the most the agent can put at risk.

Which AI tools work with the IBKR AI Connector?

Interactive Brokers says the Connector works with any AI tool that uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and it added Perplexity as an official partner in Q3 2026. The login is handled on IBKR's side, so you do not paste an API key into the AI app.

What can an autonomous AI agent trade at IBKR?

At launch the scope is global stocks and options, with a choice of regular day, overnight, or combined trading sessions. Check IBKR's own AI integrations page for the current list before you fund a partition.
