Charles Schwab reported third quarter 2026 results before the open on Thursday, October 15, 2026, and the number that matters to anyone running code is not earnings per share. It is trades. Clients placed an average of 10.7 million trades a day, up 44% from 7.4 million a year ago.
That is a lot more flow hitting the same tape, in the same quarter Schwab rolled out its Charley AI assistant and promoted single stock futures on thinkorswim.
Quick answer
Schwab posted record GAAP earnings of $1.62 a share ($1.69 adjusted, up 29%) on $7.2 billion of revenue, up 17%. Daily average trades hit 10.7 million, up 44% year over year, and trading revenue rose 16% to $1.2 billion. For bot traders, the product news outranks the earnings: Charley still cannot place trades, single stock futures add a near round-the-clock venue, and the Schwab API’s 7-day token problem is untouched.

What did Schwab actually report on October 15, 2026?
A strong quarter by any yardstick. Revenue of $7.17 billion landed right on the roughly $7.18 to $7.20 billion consensus analysts carried into the print, while adjusted EPS of $1.69 cleared the $1.66 to $1.67 estimate. The GAAP pre-tax margin came in at 52.7%.
CEO Rick Wurster put it plainly in the release: “We are delivering new capabilities and solutions,” adding that “our leading value proposition continues to resonate with investors and RIAs.”

Why should a bot trader care about a custodian’s income statement? Because a 44% jump in trades is a different market. More flow means deeper books in the crowded names and more chop in the ones nobody watches. A mean-reversion system tuned to 2025 volatility is now trading a tape it was never fitted on.
Can Charley actually trade for you?
No. Charley, announced September 30, 2026 and rolling out in phases to eligible U.S. retail clients, handles account and market information, watchlists, alerts, transfers, payments and a short list of maintenance tasks like adding beneficiaries or enrolling in dividend reinvestment. Trade execution is not on the list.
Schwab says Charley works inside the authenticated session, acts only at the client’s direction, asks for confirmation before changing anything, and does not train on client data.
We broke down the full capability list in our report on what Schwab’s Charley AI assistant can and cannot do.
The more interesting thread is Wurster’s second AI path. He has framed Charley as the default front door, plus a controlled Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for clients who want to connect their own AI models under Schwab’s permissions. A chatbot that cannot trade is a feature. A permissioned endpoint your model can query is a platform.
What do single stock futures on thinkorswim change for automated strategies?
Schwab launched cash-settled single stock futures on more than 50 large U.S. stocks in August, traded on CME and available on thinkorswim to clients approved for futures. Standard contracts generally cover 100 shares, with 10-share micros on selected names.
What it means for code, in order of importance:
- Overnight gaps become tradable. An earnings reaction at 4:35 p.m. ET used to be something your bot watched. Now there is a venue.
- Shorting without a locate. Futures are two-sided by design. No borrow fees, no hard-to-borrow surprise before the open.
- Cash settlement removes delivery logic. Your position code never has to handle share assignment.
- Sizing gets coarse. One standard contract on a $400 stock is $40,000 of notional. Micros help, but not every name has one.
Near 24-hour access is not near 24-hour liquidity. Thin overnight books mean wider spreads and slippage your backtest never priced. If you test an overnight futures system, use tools built for the asset class. Our guide to backtesting software for futures covers the options.
What does it mean for bot traders in practice?
Schwab is building the consumer AI door first and the machine door second. Bot traders live behind the second door.
Your plumbing did not get fixed. The Schwab trader API still issues a refresh token that dies every 7 days, forcing a manual re-login. Our guide to why the Schwab API 7-day token keeps logging your bot out has the workaround. Skip the weekly re-auth and Monday’s signal fires into a 401 error.
Rivals are moving faster on machine access. Robinhood and Public already let agents act inside accounts, and Interactive Brokers just let outside AI tools run saved screeners. We covered both in our roundup of broker AI agent launches and our report on the IBKR connector for ChatGPT, Claude and Grok.

A sane test sequence before any capital moves:
- Test Charley on read-only tasks first, and confirm the confirmation prompts fire.
- Trade one micro futures contract by hand and log the overnight spread at three different hours.
- Re-measure slippage on anything outside the regular session. Our piece on why paper trading proves nothing until slippage shows up shows where the gap opens.
- Size for the multiplier, not the ticker.
What should investors watch next?
- Schwab’s MCP server. Watch for a pilot date, scopes and whether trade permissions are on the table. Nothing was dated in the release.
- Charley’s rollout. The phased October rollout to eligible U.S. retail clients should finish over the coming weeks. Watch for any move from service tasks into order handling.
- The rest of broker earnings season. Interactive Brokers and Robinhood report in the coming weeks. Compare their trade counts with Schwab’s 44% before you assume this is a Schwab story rather than a market story.
Our take
The 44% jump in daily trades is the headline for anyone who automates, because your strategy is now trading against far more flow than the data you fitted it on.
Charley is not the story, even if the press cycle treats it that way. A competent service assistant that will not trade in year one is the responsible call for a firm holding $13.33 trillion. The MCP path is what to track into 2027. If it ships with real scopes, it is the first sanctioned bridge between retail AI tools and the biggest U.S. custodian. If it stays in pilot, nothing changed.
Next step: re-run your backtest on the last 90 days only and compare fills and drawdown with your full history. If the recent window looks different, the market moved, and your parameters should too.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many trades did Schwab clients place per day in Q3 2026?
Schwab reported 10.7 million daily average trades in the third quarter of 2026, up 44% from 7.4 million in the third quarter of 2025, according to its October 15, 2026 earnings release.
Can Schwab's Charley AI assistant place trades?
No. Charley handles account and market information, watchlists, alerts, transfers, payments and maintenance tasks like adding beneficiaries. Trade execution was not part of the announced capabilities.
Does the Schwab API still require weekly re-authentication?
Yes. The Schwab trader API refresh token expires every 7 days, so most retail bot setups need a manual re-login each week. The Q3 product news did not change that.
What are single stock futures on thinkorswim?
Cash-settled futures on more than 50 large U.S. stocks, traded on CME and available on thinkorswim to approved futures clients. Standard contracts generally cover 100 shares, with 10-share micros on selected names.
What is an MCP server and why does it matter for trading bots?
Model Context Protocol is an open standard that lets AI models connect to outside tools and data through a structured interface. A broker-run MCP server would give bot builders a sanctioned, permissioned way to query account and market data.
